TOPIC FORM - GENERAL SERVICE CONFERENCE 2009

THEME:  IS YOUR GROUP IN THE LOOP?

CLOSING DATE FOR SUBMISSION OF TOPICS IS FRIDAY 26th JUNE 2009

TOPIC:

That a one off meeting be held between the General Service Conference and representatives of all CSOs to discuss and promote unity and cooperation between the two arms of service in AA.

1.    It could be held by extending the conference by 1 Day

2.    Topics to be discussed could be submitted by those attending in advanced and then distributed to all attendees.

WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND OR REASON FOR THE TOPIC?:

There is ongoing disunity in some sections of AAs service arms!

CONFERENCE CHARTER AUSTRALIAN SECTION

1. Purpose:

The Australian General Service Conference of Alcoholics Anonymous is a guardian of the

World Services and of the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. The

Conference shall be a service body only; never a government for Alcoholics Anonymous.

As the guardians of the Twelve Traditions it is the conferences’ responsibility to help promote Unity within AA where it can.

Tradition 1 Long. Each member of Alcoholics Anonymous is but a small part of a great whole. A.A. must continue to live or most of use will surely die. Hence our common welfare comes first. But individual welfare follows close afterward.

Tradition 1. Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon A.A. Unity.

Tradition 4 Long. With respect to its own affairs, each A.A. group should be responsible to no other authority than its own conscience. But when its plans concern the welfare of neighboring groups also, those groups ought to be consulted. And no group, regional committee, or individual should ever take any action that might greatly affect A.A. as a whole without conferring with the Trustees of the General Service Board. On such issues our common welfare is paramount.

Tradition 4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or A.A. as a whole.

HOW WILL THE FELLOWSHIP OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS BENEFIT FROM THIS SUGGESTION?

Unity is what AA is about our first tradition gives us our problem and the rest are about how to achieve this unity. So anything we can do to achieve Unity will benefit AA Immensely.

WHAT ARE THE ESTIMATED COSTS OF IMPLEMENTING THIS SUGGESTION?

I days extra hire of Conference facilities + Cost of getting Central Service representatives to conferance.

HAVE YOU ASKED YOUR GROUP, DISTRICT OR AREA TO MAKE A DECISION ABOUT THIS TOPIC AND, IF SO, WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME? (Note: A full consultative process is recommended, but any Member or unstructured Group has the right to submit direct to National Office.)
